“Lou Piniella, the American League’s Rookie of the Year in 1969, was traded by the Kansas City Royals today along with pitcher Ken Wright in exchange for reliever Lindy McDaniel. Piniella voiced immediate approval of the deal and is expected to see a great deal of action for the Yankees both in the outfield and as a designated hitter. A native of Tampa, Florida, Lou played semi-pro ball with Ken Suarez and Tony LaRussa, both of whom played in the majors.”
